About Gabi – From Germany to Playa del Carmen and back
I was born in Germany and I decided after one vacation in Mexico to move to Playa del Carmen. In Germany, I was working as a book & record seller in a local store and later I went to university to become a social worker counseling drug addicts.
In 2001 I was ready for a change and moved to Playa del Carmen without knowing any Spanish and my English language skills were very basic. However, I was excited to start my new life in Playa del Carmen with like-minded people from all over the world and I had money for about a few months. So, I started the process of obtaining immigration papers for Mexico to be able to get work in Playa del Carmen. Over the next years, I had different jobs and I was living in different areas of the Riviera Maya: In Chemuyil, I was living in a typical Mexican Palapa, taking care of a friend‘s estate in the middle of the jungle. While working as a hotel employee at the reception of an all-inclusive hotel close to Puerto Aventuras, I was living in a trailer on Xpu-Ha Beach. And when starting my job as a travel agent in a local swiss-owned travel agency, I moved to Playa del Carmen living in a small house in the center.
In 2001 Playa del Carmen was still a small beach town at the Caribbean Sea with lots of undeveloped areas but this changed over the next several years and I witnessed the growth of Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the entire Riviera Maya firsthand.
While starting my own business in 2009, I was invited to join a group of women, most of them business owners, to create an annual food festival for Playa del Carmen. Taste of Playa (2009 to 2013) was a big and successful culinary event with more than 7500 visitors, 40 participant restaurants from Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya and many volunteers helping set up the stage in the heart of Paya del Carmen. Being part of the Executive Committee of Taste of Playa was an incredible experience and journey that not only nutriate my just starting business, it also showed me what a group of incredible women from different nations and cultures can accomplish.
