Hello to all of you - my name is Gabi
I was born in Germany and I decided after one vacation in Mexico to move to Playa del Carmen. In Germany, I was fortunate to get an education in selling & counselling, and I worked as a salesperson for a local book & record store and later I was working as a Social Worker counselling drug addicts.
In 2001 I was ready for a change and moved to Playa del Carmen without knowing any Spanish and my English was very basic. I started my new live in Playa del Carmen with different jobs and I was living in different areas. At Xpu-Ha Beach, south of Playa del Carmen in a trailer, in Chemuyil, the middle of the jungle in a typical Mexican Palapa, in an employee-apartment of an All inclusive Hotel close to Puerto Aventuras, and in different Condos, Houses and Apartments in Playa del Carmen. 2001 Playa del Carmen was still a small village at the Caribbean Sea with lots of undeveloped areas.
Today, in 2017, things have changed for me and Playa del Carmen.
Today, Playa del Carmen is the most popular destination in Mexico and is not only attractive to national and international tourists, but also to expats and retirees. Playa del Carmen converted from small village to a cosmopolitan and bilingual beach town where people from all over the world live together and has been on and off the fastest growing city in Latin America.
Today, I own a small house on the other side of the highway, half a block from Avenida Juarez and 7 minutes by bike to the beach or 5th Avenue. I love my neighborhood because I can shop locally at all the small grocery shops, butchers, and vegetable & fruit markets. And, if I need a supermarket or even a bigger mall with banks, cinema and other shops, I drive 5 or 7 minutes to either Centro Maya or Plaza Las Americas. I now speak very good English and Spanish and I own a Boutique Real Estate Agency that offers Sales & Long Term Rentals in Playa del Carmen.
For me personally it has been and still is fascinating to observe the ongoing growth of Playa del Carmen & the Riviera Maya including Tulum. I love to discover new things all the time and the weekends never are boring. Besides beautiful beaches along the 250km long coastline, magical cenotes in the jungle, it is the diversity in restaurants, shops, bars and people that make Playa del Carmen & the Riviera Maya, including the Yucatan a very special place.
